You have only to cross the street from the Market Street entrance to Waverley Station to be whisked to the hotel lobby high above you. Walk out the front door and Edinburgh Castle, the National Galleries and Princes Street are all less than 10 minutes away. Built when newspapers were powerhouses of influence, hubris is stamped all over this magnificent building — from the oak panelling and stained glass to the epic green-and-white marble staircase and fantasy tower turrets.

Built over nine floors you'll need the map provided it's an urban cliff-face, with many rooms offering views that stretch from the castle to Calton Hill. Warrens of offices are now bedrooms with the emphasis on understated comfort, while the Penthouse Suite was originally the newspaper pigeon loft: perhaps the origin of Tweeting? For a former newspaper they're a little poor at communicating — information about services is in short supply. However the quietly capable staff seem up to any challenge — able to find a kilt on short notice, sort out your shopping or organise your sightseeing.

You'll want to try room service, if only to use the compartment that allows trays to be discreetly delivered and collected without ever opening your bedroom door; there's a good old-fashioned shoe-shine service, too. Rooms come in all shapes, sizes and configurations, a welcome relief from the usual square cells. Everyone gets a safe and minibar with fresh milk, and 'Reporters' rooms get espresso machines, although 'Editors' and 'Directors' have to manage without. The look is either New England seaside pale with soft grey walls and carpets, light waxed oak panelling and tweed the colour of sand, or more traditional, in shades of heathery hills and stormy sky.

Bathrooms are a classy, restrained exercise in the use of white and grey marble. If you like life at the top, the Penthouse Suite has a spiral staircase, sauna and private terrace and possibly a few pigeons looking lost. Deep sea blue velvet banquettes feel slightly louche in the best possible way , and do ask for a balcony booth to people watch with a cocktail or alcoholic punch in hand.

I would recommend it for a scottish tea experience. The place wasn't that crowded. The food menu looked delicious but i haven't tried it. Read more. On checking in I mentioned that my wife did not go in lifts, because of claustrophobia, we were immediately moved from the 9th floor to the 4th effectively the ground floor. Such a treat! No stairs! Our whole stay was just perfect thanks to the Scotsman.

We took the tram from the airport and had less than a 10 minute walk from the stop to the hotel a lot of foot traffic, but pretty easy for us with our large suitcases. We had an overnight flight from the USA, and had requested early check in at Noon as opposed to their normal 2p check in time so we could catch a quick nap.

It cost us GBP30 to do so, but we knew that in advance and felt that was well worth getting the most fresh start to our day. Our room was bright and cheerful and, with the small whisky sample bottles awaiting us, provided a great, proved to be a lovely spot to relax from our busy travel days.

The hotel is only half a block walk from the Royal Mile and is pretty much at the halfway point of the road between Holyroodhouse Palace on one end, and Edinburgh Castle on the other. Very very pleased with our visit and would stay again in a heartbeat. Date of stay: July Rooms. Dear tracyamarek, Thank you for your wonderful review. I am delighted that we were able to get you into your room early and that you appreciated the refurbished decor and luxurious amenities. I hope that you will choose us again for any future stays to Edinburgh. Jaanalp wrote a review Aug 9.
